Film Review: FANTOM KILLER (1998)

Sep 20, 2017

Massacre Video is known for SOV, obscure gore, and extreme cinema. They have released modern movies from well known indie filmmakers and classics from the gore genre. While their releases are hit or miss, they do provide a little love for many different sub genre collectors out there.

Directed by Roman Nowicki, this is one of the craziest Polish-SOV-horror-pornos you will ever see; or maybe the only one, since that is quite a sub genre of its own. Fantom Killer is an ultra low budget film that has even managed to spawn sequels. It is a slasher film with tons of naked chicks. For some people, this is enough to make it worth their time and money. I, however, am torn on this one. I added it to my collection for less than ten bucks. I enjoy my Massacre Video collection, but probably wouldn’t have been real happy with this one if was over ten. With all of that being said, I’m not sure it will get many re-watches from me.

As far as a horror film goes, it just barely manages to be one. Sure, it has a killer and a little bit of gore. It also has couple cringe worthy moments that pay homage to some disturbing Giallo-type kills. For the most part, however, it’s really just a poorly written softcore porn. In fact, now that I think of it, I’m not really sure if it’s even that, since there really isn’t much sex either. It is just scene after scene of girls finding strange reasons to get naked. Some of the dialogue between the male characters is hilariously misogynistic. Some of the stalking scenes even have some stylized editing. I’m just not completely sold because of the fact that it doesn’t give enough attention to either genre that it claims to be. This makes me wonder whether the porn collector or horror collector will be completely satisfied with the purchase.

In the end, it is a film that doesn’t know what it is. It has glimpses of hilarity and brutality. It’s barely above average in disturb factor. I think Massacre collectors should definitely get it. I think horror collectors don’t need to put more than ten bucks into it. The group that may want to go over ten is the group that loves the SOV-shit-shows. If you’re one of these guys, you may already know about this one anyway.
