Film Review: MEAT BUTCHER BABY 2 (2017)

Jul 27, 2018

Back in 2009 director Yan Kaos did a short gore film called Meat Butcher Baby. Seven years later he made the longer and much improved Blood Orchestra: Cacophony of Death. It was around this time that his D.I.Y Production company started picking up steam in the US.

Now in 2018, Yan is working on distribution of gore anthologies, limited releases of rare films from around the world, and his own stuff. So when I was checking out his latest Facebook inventory, I had to pick up a few things to see what was going on in the world of gore. It was here where I picked up a gore anthology, Meat Butcher Baby 2, and Nekro Fuck Maniac.

I have to start out by saying that this is easily my favorite of Yan’s films. With this movie, he improved upon his gore effects and direction. He managed to tell a story in this sequel, similar to the structure of something like August Underground. There is a clear narrative structure here, as opposed to the unclear narrative of Blood Orchestra. The torture and brutality of Necromance is here as well; however, he balances it nicely with the great strides that he has made in his storytelling methods. It’s not too often that directorial approach comes up when discussing underground splatter films. This one is very deserving though. He even uses different cameras during different segments to set off the story and perspective being told.

In the end, this is a highly recommended film for collectors of the most extreme films. I am three for three when it comes to absolutely loving a blind buy from this director’s catalog. He is one of the only Canadian voices in a film genre dominated by European filmmakers. He can also totally hang with the best of them. When I watch his films I think back to glory days of SOV splatter like the Violent Shit saga. His ominous and claustrophobic settings, combined with the uncomfortable silence created by a lack of dialogue creates very unsettling cinema, even for the most battle hardened gore film fans. So if you think you are one of these people, I definitely suggest that you check out this movie.
